How to make
race skiing safer

communication between trainer and skier

Cos is a training instrument for racing skiers in the profi race skiing segment. It serves as a tracker and as a communication tool between the coach and the skier. With the help of the training system, the performance of the skier can be closely monitored, analyzed and adjusted.
The goal is to support injury prevention by increasing training efficiency and quality as much as possible. By analyzing the driving behavior, sources of false postures or weaknesses can be identified and the performance can be increased. The relationship between the coach and the skier is the starting point for the analysis of the skier’s behavior. Therefore, the focus was laid on the communication between the trainer and the driver.

Research

During the process, race skiers were asked about communication between their coach using interviews. Key insights show that race skiers often cannot properly assign mistakes feedback. Communication is in many cases still done via walkie-talkies.

"Feedback needs assignment, otherwise there will be confusion."

Philipp, Professional youth racing skiier

"Direct implementation [feedback] is difficult because you often don't know exactly what is meant."

Lisa, Youth racing skiier

Devices are attached to different parts of the body to make it clear where the incorrect posture occurred (arm, leg…). This way, the rider knows exactly which part of the body is at fault and can implement the feedback immediately in the next run.
